1 Hi, Here are the last paragraph of chapter two, Lady Chatterley's Lover "Time went on. Whatever happened, nothing happened, because she was so beautifully out of contact. She and Clifford lived in their ideas and his books. She entertained. . .there were always people in the house. Time went on as the clock does, half past eight instead of half past seven." For "half past eight instead of half past seven", the Chinese version is "after 7 o'clock, it's 8 o'clock. After 8 o'clock, what time is it?" But I feel it's not that complicated. It just means "half past eight replacing half past seven", which describes how time goes. Am I right? Thank you in advance 2 But I feel it's not that complicated. Yes. 4 You cannot understand half past eight instead of half past seven. unless i you know when Lady Chatterley's Lover was written and iithe variability of sunrise and sunset in the UK. iii When British Summer Time was instigated i Lady Chatterley's Lover was published in 1928. ii Today, in London, the sun rose at 0800 GMT and will set at 1531 GMT. In June the sun will rise at 0440 and set at 2121 iii Before 1916, the time in Great Britain was Greenwich Mean Time for all of the year. In 1916, in an attempt to obtain more benefit from natural daylight during the working day, the government ordered that, each year, all clocks were to be set forward by one hour when summer came, and would revert to GMT in the late autumn. This new time is known as British Summer Time. The process of doing this is called "putting the clocks on.", and we say, "The clocks go on in March." This is what Lawrence is referring to, and he uses a small pun. Time went on = time passed relentlessly. Time went on = the clocks were advanced by an hour. Hence the time was 0830 rather than 0730. This is also seen as an inevitable event that marks the passage of the year/time. 5 You cannot understand half past eight instead of half past seven. unless i you know when Lady Chatterley's Lover was written and iithe variability of sunrise and sunset in the UK. iii When British Summer Time was instigated The process of doing this is called "putting the clocks on.", and we say, "The clocks go on in March." It would seem that you also can't understand it unless you know that BE uses the expression "putting the clocks on" for what we'd call "moving the clocks ahead". We have what we call "daylight savings time" here as well, but we'd never refer to it as "putting the clocks on" or say "the clocks go on in March." Who knows what else may have escaped me back when I read Lady Chatterly's Lover?
